About a young girl not being excepted for who she is.
Kyla was a young girl with a passion for animals. She lived close to a forest and loved the wildlife and the ancient trees, which made her feel protected and safe. Something she did not experience in the place where she lived. The villagers spread made-up stories about her and often looked at her as if she might attack them at any moment. They could not understand her wild nature and her desire for freedom.
Kyla spent more and more time in the forest with the wild animals. She would often sit under the trees, with her back leaning against their trunks, looking around and enjoying the silence that surrounded her. She often wondered how she could do her best to be more accepted by those around her. Sometimes she wished she didn’t feel so different from the other young people. But that goal was impossile to reach, for Kyla had an external feature that could not be overlooked. From her wild head of hair, two crescent-shaped, ribbed horns protruded jauntily into the air. Even though she would try her best to fit in. Her horns made it impossible.
At one point, the harassment in the village became so untenable for Kyla that she took refuge in the forest. She decided to live in the forest from now on, where she felt at home and protected by the dense foliage.
The longer she lived in the forest the more she felt she was hearing voices. At first, they were light, thin voices like a phantom in the mist. But lately, she seemed to understand what those voices were saying without using words. Over time, she discovered that the voices were connected to a special tree or animal. The owl that sat in the tree at night, against which she often fell asleep, had a dark, heavy voice like that of the old man she knew from the village, who was as old as 100 years. When she listened to it, she seemed to get different inspirations that helped her understand things. The squirrel that climbed up along the tree swiftly had a little squeaky voice, which often inspired her to search for food in the most peculiar places. Then there was the voice of the hedgehog, which warned her when danger was imminent.
Kyla was beginning to recognise the voices. Even the trees seemed to speak in an ancient language that made her feel a strong sense of connectedness to every living being. What amazed her most was the ease and power with which each living creature put forward his or her own unique voice without hesitating or feeling different from the others. This gave her the power to discover her own unique voice.
More and more, she found that she drew her strength from the mighty horns, which had grown into full, powerful antlers. She learned from the animals and the ancient trees how to stand in her power and face life. Her self-confidence grew.
One day, at the edge of the forest, she saw a group of young people talking to each other. Without hesitation, she stepped towards them and greeted them with a strength in her voice that made all look up. She saw them looking surprised and no one dared to say anything. Kyla knew she was ready to face the world again and proudly stepped into life outside the forest.
